South Ribble Metal Detecting Club - Guide To Site Finding

Locate your site using Ordinance survey maps or Google Earth. If you don't have access to a computer, your local Library would be a good source of information.

Before approaching the farmer gain an under standing of the history of the local area and the farm if possible.

Take some finds along with you (Musket balls, coins, buckles etc), ready to show the owner. To give him or her an idea of the items you would like to find.

Approach the farmer in question asking permission only for yourself or one other for the time being, highlighting the search contract details (insurance and filling in the holes).

Once permission has been obtained, always good practice to give the owner a gift (wine or spirits).

Once permission has been obtained, sort an agreeable date when someone is around to inform the owner you have arrived to detect.

Remember always show the farmer your finds at the end of the day, try not to leave the site without saying thank you.

After a few visits, as the farmer for a rally, explaining the the club will pay for the privilege £5-6 per head.
